The Karelian Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences develops cooperation with scientific and educational organizations of Belarus. One of the forms of cooperation is the participation of students, graduate students and young scientists in the events of both sides. In particular, in May, the Karelian Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences hosted a master student from the Faculty of Chemical, Biological and Geographical Sciences of VSU named after P.M. Masherov Anton Zubov. Studying in the specialty "Geography", he was able to get acquainted with the theoretical and practical methods of studying geology. Anton Zubov receives a higher education of the second stage in the specialty "Geography". The object of research for a novice scientist is the Western Dvina River. According to Anton, the issues of geology in the study of water bodies are also very important. The Institute of Geology of the KarRC RAS has a laboratory of geochemistry, Quaternary geology and geoecology. It was in it that the undergraduate was offered to do an internship. – I agreed, because Karelia is known for its nature and unusual landforms. I went for new experience, knowledge and, of course, emotions. As a result, I got much more than I expected,” said Anton Zubov. Big surprises for the guest from Belarus in Petrozavodsk were Lake Onega, on the shore of which the Karelian Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences is located, and white nights. The staff of the laboratory and the department of international cooperation prepared a rich program for the trainee. In the first days he was introduced to the areas of research of the Institute of Geology of the Karelian Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Museum of Precambrian Geology. A tour of Petrozavodsk for Anton Zubov was held with an emphasis on Karelian stone in the architecture of the city. The visiting part began with the Devil's Chair tract, where the undergraduate learned about the history of Lake Onega and its catchment area. One-day expeditions took place in various parts of South and Central Karelia. Laboratory specialists Tatyana Shelekhova and Grigory Rodionov introduced the student to the unique landforms formed as a result of glacier retreat: kams, eskers, marginal and radial ridges, glacier-lake plains and others. During the field trips, field work methods were trained. As part of one of the trips, the scientists were accompanied by the film crew of the TV channel Sampo TV 360. Also in Karelia, Anton Zubov began to collect his own collection of minerals. The first samples for it (some of them are 2.2 billion years old!) were presented to him by the head of the Museum of Precambrian Geology of the Institute of Geology of the Karelian Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences Oleg Lavrov and the junior researcher of the museum Alexandra Rakhmanova. – In terms of relief, Karelia is very different from Belarus, so the theoretical and practical knowledge that I have acquired here is priceless. I would like to thank all the specialists who received me for their kindness, responsiveness, detailed information, literature and samples of minerals. The acquired skills and teaching aids will definitely come in handy in my research work. All the staff I met are very knowledgeable, experienced, energetic, and you can feel how dedicated they are to their work! shared his impressions Anton Zubov. He also thanked the specialists of the International Cooperation Department of the KarRC RAS for organizing the trip, comfortable accommodation and stay in Karelia. Between the Karelian Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Vitebsk State University named after P.M. Masherov, there is a cooperation agreement. The representative of the university conveyed warm greetings from the teachers and the administration of the university and wishes to continue further interaction in terms of student exchange and joint research.
