It has become a tradition at our university for renowned academics from the Russian Federation to lecture to VSU students and faculty on current topics. The beginning of this academic year was no exception. On September 4, Alexey Shmatko, Acting Director of the Institute of Regional Economic Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Economics, Professor and Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Education, addressed Masherov students online. He presented a report on «Managing Regional Labor Potential in the Context of Implementing Socioeconomic Priorities of Regional Policy», prepared as part of the Scientific Research Project (SRP) topic «New Conditions and Factors of Socio-Ecological Development of Russian Regions in the Context of the Digital Transformation of the Economy and Society».

On behalf of the VSU leadership and all those present, the speaker was welcomed Vice-Rector for Research Evgeny Arshansky, who thanked Alexey Shmatko for his cooperation and expressed confidence that the lecture series would continue. In turn, Alexey Dmitrievich congratulated everyone on the start of the new academic year and wished them continued creative work for the benefit of the Union State.

The lecturer then briefly introduced those present to the history of the Institute of Regional Economic Problems and outlined the current activities of its staff. Particular attention was paid to the distinguished scholar, former scientific director of the Institute, and Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladimir Okrepilov, who passed away this summer. Vladimir Valentinovich was a good friend of our university, repeatedly speaking to Masherovites online and offline, and participated in the celebration of VSU's 115th anniversary, where he was awarded the title of «Honorary Professor of Vitebsk State University named after P.M. Masherov».

Alexey Shmatko then discussed labor resources, methods for assessing a region's labor potential, factors in the development of the labor market and employment, and much more.
